Description

RS31212 5V, 4A eFuse for Intelligent Power Rail Protection

As 5V power rails continue to power storage devices, PCIe cards, USB peripherals, embedded systems, and industrial electronics, protecting these rails from overloads and fault conditions is essential for long-term system reliability. The RS31212 is a highly integrated 5V eFuse that provides intelligent circuit protection while reducing component count, board space, and power loss.

Designed specifically for 5V distributed power rails, the RS31212 integrates a low 34mΩ pass MOSFET, adjustable 0.5A to 4A current limiting, programmable output slew rate, adjustable input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and a fixed 5.7V output overvoltage clamp into an ultra-compact 2 × 2 mm WSON-8 package. The result is a complete electronic fuse solution that simplifies system design while protecting valuable downstream circuitry.

Intelligent Protection for Modern 5V Systems

Conventional fuses cannot protect against many of today’s transient fault conditions and require replacement after operation. The RS31212 continuously monitors operating conditions and actively limits current and disconnects the load whenever abnormal conditions are detected.

Integrated protection features include:

  • Adjustable 0.5A to 4A current limit
  • Fixed 5.7V output overvoltage clamp
  • Overtemperature protection
  • Programmable input UVLO
  • Adjustable output slew-rate control
  • Logic enable input for power sequencing

These integrated functions improve system robustness while significantly reducing external component count compared to discrete protection circuits.

Low-Loss Power Delivery

Efficiency matters even on lower-power rails. The RS31212 integrates a 34mΩ power MOSFET that minimizes voltage drop and power dissipation while eliminating the need for an external pass FET.

Benefits include:

  • Lower conduction losses
  • Reduced heat generation
  • Improved system efficiency
  • Smaller PCB footprint
  • Simplified design

The highly integrated architecture makes this eFuse ideal for compact systems where both efficiency and board space are critical.

Programmable Startup Control

Large output capacitors and hot-plug events can generate significant inrush current. The RS31212 allows designers to precisely control startup by programming the output slew rate with a single external capacitor connected to the dV/dt pin.

Together with programmable current limiting and UVLO, the device helps:

  • Reduce inrush current
  • Prevent nuisance trips
  • Improve hot-plug reliability
  • Sequence multiple power rails
  • Protect upstream power supplies

This flexibility makes the RS31212 well suited for storage, computing, and embedded applications with demanding startup requirements.

Multiple Fault Response Options

Different systems require different fault-handling strategies. This family is available with multiple protection modes to simplify system integration.

Available options include:

  • RS31212A — Latch-off protection
  • RS31212B — Auto-retry protection
  • RS31212D — Auto-retry with Quick Output Discharge (QOD)

This allows designers to choose the behavior best suited for their application while maintaining the same compact footprint and electrical performance.

Ideal Applications

The RS31212 is optimized for protecting 5V power rails in applications such as:

  • USB-powered equipment
  • PCI and PCIe cards
  • Server auxiliary power rails
  • SSD and HDD storage devices
  • Embedded computing systems
  • Networking equipment
  • Industrial controllers
  • Adapter-powered electronics
  • General-purpose 5V distribution rails

Part of Reed Semiconductor’s Compact eFuse Family

The RS31212 is one member of Reed Semiconductor’s family of compact eFuses, allowing designers to standardize on a common protection architecture across multiple system voltages.

Device Optimized For
RS31211 3.3V rails with 3.8V output clamp
RS31212 5V rails with 5.7V output clamp
RS31311 12V rails with 13.7V output clamp
RS31309 Wide-input 2.97V–18V applications
RS31210 / RS31310 Higher-current 5A eFuse solutions
RS31511 / RS31512 Stackable high-current eFuses for AI, servers, and networking equipment

Because these devices share a common protection philosophy, designers can easily deploy the most appropriate eFuse for each power rail while maintaining consistent system behavior and simplifying qualification.

Why Choose the RS31212?

The RS31212 combines intelligent fault protection, low-loss power delivery, and programmable startup control into a compact solution optimized for 5V power rails. Its adjustable current limiting, integrated overvoltage protection, selectable fault-response options, and tiny 2 × 2 mm footprint make it an excellent choice for modern storage, computing, networking, and industrial systems where reliability, efficiency, and board space are equally important.
