Description
RSM3215 3A Buck CoolModule™ with Integrated Inductor
The RSM3215 is a compact, high-efficiency 3A synchronous buck CoolModule™ with an integrated inductor, designed for space-constrained point-of-load (PoL) power applications. Operating from a 2.4V to 4V input supply, this integrated DC-DC power module combines power conversion and magnetic integration in a compact 2.5mm × 3.5mm × 1.6mm, 16-pin LGA package.
The RSM3215 family offers an adjustable-output version with a 0.6V feedback reference and four fixed-output voltage options: 1.2V, 1.8V, 2.5V, and 3.3V. The fixed-output variants eliminate the need for an external feedback resistor divider, reducing component count and simplifying power supply implementation.
High-Performance 3A Buck Power Conversion
The RSM3215 delivers up to 3A of output current with 1% output voltage accuracy and a 2MHz switching frequency. Its Constant-On-Time (COT) control architecture provides fast transient response, helping maintain output voltage regulation during rapid changes in load current.
The high switching frequency supports compact power supply designs, while the integrated inductor eliminates the need to select and place an external power inductor. These characteristics make the RSM3215 well suited for high-density electronics requiring efficient, low-voltage DC-DC power conversion.
Flexible PFM/PWM Control for Improved Light-Load Efficiency
The RSM3215 supports automatic PFM/PWM and forced PWM operating modes, allowing designers to select the switching behavior best suited to their application.
In automatic PFM/PWM mode, the converter transitions between Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) according to load conditions. PFM operation reduces switching losses during light-load operation, improving efficiency in systems with variable power demands.
Forced PWM mode maintains 2MHz switching operation, providing predictable switching behavior for applications where switching-frequency management is important. Combined with fast COT transient response, these operating modes provide flexibility for both dynamic and relatively constant loads.
Adjustable and Fixed-Output Voltage Options
The RSM3215 family supports two output-voltage configuration approaches to accommodate different point-of-load requirements.
Adjustable-Output Version
The adjustable-output variant uses a 0.6V feedback reference and an external resistor divider to establish the desired output voltage. This configuration provides flexibility for applications requiring a voltage that differs from the available fixed-output options.
Fixed-Output Versions
Four fixed-output configurations are available:
- 1.2V: Low-voltage digital logic and embedded electronics
- 1.8V: Digital interfaces, memory-related circuitry, and peripheral supplies
- 2.5V: Sensors, interfaces, and auxiliary power rails
- 3.3V: Microcontrollers, communication interfaces, and general-purpose logic supplies
Fixed-output versions simplify circuit implementation by eliminating the external feedback resistor divider. Designers can select the appropriate output configuration while maintaining a common CoolModule™ package footprint.
Integrated Inductor and Compact LGA Packaging
The RSM3215 integrates the power inductor within a compact 16-pin LGA package measuring just 2.5mm × 3.5mm × 1.6mm. Its 8.75mm² package footprint helps conserve valuable PCB area in space-constrained electronic assemblies.
Unlike discrete buck converter implementations requiring a separately selected inductor, the integrated CoolModule™ architecture simplifies component selection and PCB layout. This reduces the number of external power-stage components and supports more streamlined power supply designs.
The compact package is particularly advantageous in optical transceiver modules, wearable electronics, smartphones, camera modules, and miniature industrial IoT devices.
Integrated Power Monitoring and Protection
The RSM3215 incorporates power-good monitoring, output discharge, overcurrent protection, and short-circuit protection to support reliable power supply operation.
An open-drain power-good output provides a status signal for system monitoring and power sequencing. The integrated output discharge function helps manage output voltage during shutdown, while overcurrent and short-circuit protection provide safeguards against abnormal load conditions.
These integrated functions reduce the need for additional external circuitry and simplify system-level power management.
Applications for Space-Constrained Point-of-Load Power
The RSM3215 CoolModule™ is designed for applications requiring compact, efficient, and flexible low-voltage power conversion. Typical applications include optical transceiver modules, smartphones and mobile devices, wearable electronics, camera modules, industrial IoT (IIoT) systems, smart sensors, and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) devices.
With its integrated inductor, fast transient response, flexible operating modes, and adjustable or fixed-output configurations, the RSM3215 provides a compact 3A DC-DC power solution for modern high-density electronic systems.
