Description
RSM3207 6A Buck CoolModule™ with I²C and Integrated Inductor
The Reed Semiconductor RSM3207 is a compact, high-efficiency 6A buck power module with an integrated inductor and I²C-compatible interface. Designed for space-constrained point-of-load (PoL) applications, the RSM3206 combines synchronous buck conversion, digital configuration, and power management in a compact 2.3mm × 3mm × 1.95mm, 15-pin LGA package.
Operating from a 2.4V to 5.5V input supply, the RSM3207 supports adjustable output voltages for low-voltage digital power rails. Its Adaptive Constant-On-Time (COT) control architecture provides fast transient response, while selectable operating modes help optimize performance across different load conditions.
High-Efficiency 6A Buck Power Conversion
The RSM3207 delivers up to 6A of continuous output current, making it suitable for compact power systems requiring high current density and minimal PCB area.
Its 2.4V to 5.5V input range supports common low-voltage power distribution architectures, including systems powered from 3.3V and 5V supply rails. The device supports adjustable output voltages, with available ranges dependent on the selected orderable variant.
With ±1% output-voltage accuracy and a 2.4MHz switching frequency, the RSM3206 supports precise voltage regulation while enabling the use of compact external capacitors. The integrated inductor further reduces external component requirements, simplifying PCB layout and supporting high-density power designs.
Adaptive Constant-On-Time Control and Fast Transient Response
The RSM3207 uses Adaptive Constant-On-Time (COT) control to respond quickly to changing load-current demands.
This control architecture is particularly useful in applications involving digital processors, communication interfaces, and other loads that experience rapid changes in operating current.
The device supports I²C-selectable Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) and forced Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) operating modes.
PFM operation reduces switching activity under light-load conditions to support improved efficiency. Forced PWM maintains continuous switching behavior, making it useful in applications where predictable switching characteristics are important.
The ability to select operating modes provides flexibility when balancing light-load efficiency, switching behavior, and transient performance.
I²C Digital Configuration and Dynamic Voltage Scaling
The RSM3207 incorporates an I²C-compatible interface operating at speeds up to 1.2MHz, allowing supported power-management functions to be configured digitally.
The device family includes a dedicated VID functionality for dynamic voltage scaling, enabling the output voltage to be adjusted during operation on supported variants.
Dynamic voltage scaling can help systems adapt their supply voltage to changing performance requirements, making it useful in power-managed digital applications.
The I²C interface also supports configuration of output-voltage ramp slew rate, operating mode, overcurrent protection behavior, and output discharge.
These digitally configurable features provide additional flexibility compared with fixed-function buck converters and can simplify integration into systems requiring coordinated power management.
Programmable Protection and Power Management
The RSM3207 incorporates configurable protection functions designed to support reliable operation under abnormal load conditions.
Overcurrent protection supports selectable Auto-Retry or Latch-Off behavior through the I²C interface. Auto-Retry allows the device to attempt recovery following an overcurrent event, while Latch-Off provides a shutdown response requiring the applicable reset or recovery action.
Programmable output-voltage ramp slew rate allows designers to control voltage transitions, while configurable output discharge provides additional control over output behavior when the converter is disabled.
Together, these functions support flexible power management in systems where startup behavior, fault handling, and voltage transitions must be carefully managed.
Integrated Inductor and Compact 15-Pin LGA Package
The RSM3207 integrates the power inductor within its compact CoolModule™ package, eliminating the need for a separate external inductor.
The device measures just 2.3mm × 3mm × 1.95mm, occupying a package footprint of approximately 6.9mm².
This high level of integration helps reduce PCB area, simplify component placement, and minimize the number of external components required for power conversion.
The compact 15-pin LGA package is particularly well suited for high-density electronics where available board space and component height are important design considerations.
Applications for Compact Point-of-Load Power
