Description

RS16520 — 5-Phase Dual-Rail TLVR Controller with AVSBus and PMBus

The RS16520 is a high-performance digital multiphase controller designed for high-current computing, graphics, server, and telecom power applications. Supporting up to five phases with dual-rail configurations from 5 + 0 to 4 + 1, the controller provides a flexible platform for powering high-current processor, FPGA, ASIC, and other core voltage rails.

Operating from a 4.5V to 16V input, the RS16520 supports output voltages from 0.2V to 2.8V with ±0.5% output-voltage accuracy and differential remote sensing. When paired with Reed Smart Power Stages or Smart Power Blocks, the RS16520 enables compact, scalable multiphase power solutions with optimized power density, transient response, and thermal performance.

Native TLVR Support for Fast Transient Response

Native Trans-Inductor Voltage Regulator (TLVR) support enables the RS16520 to respond rapidly to the large and fast load transients encountered in high-performance processor and accelerator power rails. TLVR operation requires no additional external passive components, while an integrated 1kΩ current-sense resistor further simplifies implementation.

Programmable overshoot and undershoot reduction, automatic phase add/drop, and thermal phase balancing help maintain regulation and optimize operation as load conditions change.

Flexible 5-Phase Dual-Rail Power Architecture

The RS16520 supports up to five phases with configurations ranging from 5 + 0 to 4 + 1, allowing a single controller to support either one high-current rail or two independently regulated outputs.

Flexible phase-order assignment provides additional freedom when optimizing PCB layout and power-stage placement. The controller can be paired with Reed Smart Power Stages or Smart Power Blocks to build scalable high-current power architectures.

Up to 4MHz for High-Density Power Conversion

Constant-on-time control and switching frequencies up to 4MHz enable high-density power conversion while supporting the fast dynamic response required by demanding core power rails. Programmable DC load-line control provides additional flexibility for optimizing voltage regulation under dynamic loading.

Integrated Voltage, Current and Temperature Telemetry

Integrated telemetry provides real-time visibility into key power-system operating conditions. The RS16520 supports input- and output-voltage monitoring with ±1.5% accuracy, output-current monitoring with ±1.5% accuracy, and temperature monitoring with ±2°C accuracy.

This system-level telemetry supports power management, diagnostics, performance optimization, and fault analysis.

AVSBus and PMBus Digital Power Management

The RS16520 provides AVSBus and PMBus v1.4.1 interfaces for digital power control, configuration, and system monitoring. MTP supports up to 31 configuration writes, allowing operating parameters to be programmed and retained for the application.

Integrated black-box fault recording captures diagnostic information to help identify operating conditions associated with system faults.

Comprehensive Protection for High-Current Power Rails

Integrated protection includes undervoltage lockout (UVLO), undervoltage protection (UVP), overvoltage protection (OVP), overcurrent protection (OCP), overtemperature protection (OTP), and cycle-by-cycle per-phase current limiting.

The RS16520 is offered in a compact 5mm × 5mm 40-pin QFN package and operates across a −40°C to 125°C temperature range.
